Why We Make 16-Bit Games in 2026

Why our indie studio in Fuerteventura chooses 16-bit-inspired videogames: creative freedom, readable gameplay, strong identities and modern design.

Why We Make 16-Bit Games in 2026

Pixels are a creative choice

At Pause Play Games, based in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, we are drawn to the clear visual language of 16-bit videogames. Pixel art is not simply nostalgia. It helps players recognize characters, hazards, movement and rewards in seconds. We use that clarity as a foundation for fresh mechanics, not as an excuse to copy the past.

Retro feel, modern expectations

A contemporary retro-inspired game should respect the player’s time. Responsive controls, helpful feedback, sensible checkpoints and accessibility matter as much as colors and sprites. We prototype how a game feels before polishing how it looks, then iterate on difficulty, pacing and visual effects. The goal is immediate fun that still rewards practice.

Our own worlds and music

Our projects span arcade shooters, platform adventures and more experimental ideas. Alongside development, we create original videogame soundtracks with Maupiti Studios: music designed around the level rhythm, atmosphere and player experience. We share our development journey and game releases on itch.io, while working to bring our games to more platforms over time.
