Super Mario and Sonic: Why 1990s Platform Games Still Matter
A look at the speed, level design and character of the 8-bit and 16-bit platform era.

Two approaches to movement
Super Mario Bros. (1985) established an influential platforming language, and Super Mario World (1990 in Japan) refined its accessible level design. Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) offered a contrasting identity built around momentum, slopes and spectacle on the Mega Drive/Genesis.
The level is a teacher
Great platform stages introduce an obstacle safely, remix it, then combine it with other challenges. Jump arcs, friction, enemy placement and audio feedback make movement feel deliberate. Their most durable innovation is not a particular pixel count but how consistently they communicate to the player.
Modern platformers still borrow the grammar
Pixel-art indie creators continue to use responsive controls and tight stage rhythm while introducing new systems. For our studio in Fuerteventura, the lesson is to capture the spirit of discovery rather than imitate a famous mascot or copy a classic level.
